The Harbin city government has briefed the media on the accident investigation. They say the direct cause was overloaded trucks. The drivers and other suspects are now in police custody.

The city has stepped up efforts to weigh trucks on freight scales. Three people were killed and five others injured, after four trucks plunged off the bridge.

The 15-point-4-kilometer long bridge opened to traffic last November. Its construction cost nearly 1.9 billion yuan – or three hundred million US dollars. The three-year project was completed in only 18 months.

One of the trucks in the accident was carrying 22 tons of feed, and the other three were carrying over 400 tons of limestone in total. Those three had all been outfitted to carry expanded volumes.
